Your face mask is your super-hero cape. It keeps you from spreading germs and stops others’ germs from getting into you. Unfortunately, this helpful and necessary safety tool in the age of COVID-19 has some unwanted side effects.
We’ve all seen the photos of front line health care workers taking their masks off after a long day and the red, harsh imprints and chafing that they have experienced. But even if you aren’t on the front lines, frequently wearing a face mask at work or out and about for errands and socially distanced gatherings can take its toll on your skin. And as summer heats up, so does the discomfort.
Whether you’re experiencing chafing, dryness, irritation or acne, the KARIBO team provides the following tips on how to reverse the effects of masks on your skin with CBD beauty products. Keep your skin in good shape or help it recover from long mask-wearing days.
Apply CBD Moisturizer Before Donning Your Mask
Make sure to apply a CBD-infused moisturizer before wearing a mask. This can help prevent skin irritation from where the mask rubs your face. Chafing occurs when there’s a combination of friction, moisture and irritating fabric. Prolonged rubbing of a mask’s fabric on the skin can make your skin sting or burn and a red rash can occur. Applying moisturizer could offer your skin some relief. Plus, CBD is known for its calming, anti-inflammatory properties.
If you have naturally dry or normal skin, look for a product with the moisturizing ingredient ceramide, such as KARIBO CBD Infused Facial Moisturizer, to lock moisture into the skin. For those prone to acne, select a gel moisturizer, such as KARIBO CBD Infused Hydrating Gel with the ingredient hyaluronic acid that holds 1,000 times its weight in water. This lightweight product gently and deeply hydrates.
Carry your facial moisturizer in your work bag or purse, and reapply it as needed throughout the day during breaks. For additional refreshment and a moisturizing boost, spritz a gentle toner over your face first, then apply your CBD beauty products.
Consider Skipping the Face Makeup
Foundation and masks just aren’t a good mix. For one thing, a mask will rub that foundation right off of your face! Not really a good look. Another reason is that it can lead to clogged pores under your mask from increased sebum secretion with perspiration. Also, if foundation and lipstick or lipgloss get on your mask, it’s not good for its breathability. Plus, it could cause more irritation.
Wash Your Face and Your Mask
First, keep up with your daily cleansing routine. Wash your face with a mild cleanser in the morning and before bed.
If you have purchased cotton masks with or without washable or disposable filters, make sure you wash your mask after every use. This rings especially true on hot days when you are sweating quite a bit or have been in a crowd setting such as a protest or a rare outing with the kids to the zoo.
If you’re wearing disposable masks, disposing of them after every use is ideal. However, masks may be on short supply. In that case, consider reusing them a maximum of twice, but discarding them after that, and buying a washable option. Remember that you can also create one with an old cotton t-shirt (watch the U.S. Surgeon General’s how-to video) or wear a bandana in times when you don’t have an alternative option. Of course, health care workers must follow their health care facility’s own safety protocols for personal protective equipment.
According to the CDC, “cloth face coverings should: fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face, be secured with ties or ear loops, include multiple layers of fabric, allow for breathing without restriction and be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape.”
